My work challenges the roles of femininity and portraiture by considering how nature and self fit into the context of normal. My work is a personal exploration of how I experience control and release while reflecting on my Jewish heritage of diaspora. I explore the feelings of home in self, rather than in location. My work confronts one’s desire and illusion for control at all times. There is a rejection of perfection through self-protection. This painting also references my time as a wilderness guide. What can we learn from the endurance and humility nature innately shows? It has no control over the conditions through which it endures, yet stands proudly.
