Big Sur Big View

Traveling south of Carmel on California's Coastal Highway, there are many places to pull off the road and admire the view. The area depicted here represents one of my favorites. The view is so vast - that largeness of scale is key to a successful painting along the coast. In this view, the colors of the ocean, on a clear day, are enchanting shades of blues and greens - the lightest colors are created by reflected light from a sandy bottom below the cove in the foreground. The location depicted here is one I return to again and again to meditate and to paint.
