This is an oil painting on canvas. It was done in multiple layers starting with a grisaille. I use mixtures of turpentine spirits, linseed oil and linseed stand oil as my medium, increasing the fatness with the layers, albeit in very small quantity. I favor Windsor&Newton and Holbein fine oils for my paints. As finishing touches I used a painter's knife to help show the water's effervescence. As an artist, I am fascinated by the effect of the passage of time and strive to render it in my paintings. This building is an old hydro-electric dam in my hometown. The contrast between our vivacious river against this static rundown concrete building has always been quite appealing to me. It seems ironic that the dam aged so much while siphoning the river's energy but the river remains forever young and fresh.
